Home Care in Rockville Center NY
As your loved one’s health changes, so too does the level of safety in his home. What was safe for him a few months ago may not be now. It’s important to take a look at what changes, if any, need to be made to your loved one’s home.
Assess the Situation
Take a look at what is working for your loved one about his living situation and what isn’t. He might need hand rails installed in several areas, for example, or maybe he would benefit from a ramp. Sometimes your loved one could feel threatened by these conversations, but remind him that keeping his home safe for him enables him to continue to live there without having to worry about unsafe conditions.
Fix Anything that Needs Fixing
Once you have a list, start fixing the little stuff that you can fix yourself. If your loved one has cluttered pathways or overloaded wall outlets, these problems are easy for you to resolve. For larger issues that are out of your skillset, such as securing a sink more safely to the wall, it’s a good idea to hire a handyman or a contractor who works on those types of smaller jobs. After getting the fixable items fixed, you can focus on larger adaptations.
Make a Plan for Bigger Modifications
Maybe your loved one’s counters are too high for him to use safely or his doorways need to be widened so that his walker or his wheelchair can move safely through the house. These are larger modifications that take planning in terms of time, who can do the work, and the budget for the work. Sit down with your loved one, other family members, and anyone else who needs to be involved and formulate a plan for tackling these bigger modifications.
Get Going on the Plan
After you formulate a plan, get going on it right away. Sometimes you may not have what you need right then, but there can be a part of the plan that is actionable now. If you need to price materials or talk with contractors, find another family member or hire a home care provider to stay with your loved one. Do what you have to in order to keep the plan moving forward.
Keeping your loved one safe at home takes just a little bit of planning and then implementing that plan.
