Pediatric Home Health Care in Plainview, NY – 11 Fun Ways to Cheer a Sick Child
It’s heartbreaking for parents to see their child sick and discouraged. Being happy and having a positive state of mind will help your child heal and recover. Physical health and mental health are very much inter-related to each other. Here is a list of 11 fun ways to bring happiness and joy to your child’s heart and cheer them up a little.
1. Take turns drawing pictures of each other in a different scenario. For example, draw a picture of you as a ballerina and him as a dinosaur. Or you as a butterfly and her as a pony. Have fun and be creative.
2. Make some sock puppets together and then take turns putting on a puppet show.
3. Get a few packs of cards from the dollar store and have fun playing games with them like Old Maid or Crazy 8’s or Go fish or Memory Match. When you tire of that, use them for making card castles. Look online for different ways to stack them and see who can make the highest stack before it collapses. Or build one together.
4. Make a homemade puzzle using the copy of a favorite photo. Glue it to cardboard and then cut out jigsaw puzzle pieces out of it. Give it to her to put back together.
5. If possible, play “sick Simon says” using silly commands appropriate to his abilities. It’s also a fun way to get him to do a little movement if recommended by the doctor.
6. Show-off. Make happy animal puppets out of paper bags. Put on a show to cheer her up.
7. Play pretend post office. You be the mail carrier. Line up some stuffed animals and teddy bears. You and your child make cards for each one. You stuff them in a box (the post office) and then take them out and put in a purse or bag (your mailbag) and then “deliver” them to each animal. Take turns reading the cards out loud.
8. Make a sick-day kit. Decorate a plastic bucket or bin with stickers. Fill it with comic books, joke books, beads and string, coloring books and crayons and put the lid on. This very fun box only comes out for use when your child is sick and needs cheering up.
9. Go “camping.” Set up sleeping bags in the living room. Watch a movie together and then snuggle down to go to sleep.
10. Let your child care for a “sick” stuffed animal. Bring all the tools and supplies she may need to nurse her teddy back to health. This will help take her mind off her own sickness.
11. Make a splash with a fun bath time. Fill the tub with plastic boats, buy bath drawing crayons, floating animals etc.
